Cllr Nigel Murphy, executive member for the environment, said: “As thousands of British Muslims prepare to make their Hajj pilgrimage, we are urging the community to be aware that fraudsters have been at work, claiming to offer organised trips to Mecca.
“Anyone who is trying to organise a pilgrimage should be aware of the usual advice when dealing with travel operators.
“They should make sure the operator is ATOL (Air Travel Organiser’s Licensing) protected, that the travel agent is accredited with the Saudi Embassy, check exactly what they’re paying for, and make sure they have everything in writing. Anyone who thinks they have been a victim of Hajj fraud should contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.”
