Saudi Arabia Introduces Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for UK Citizens

In a significant development that further strengthens the longstanding relationship between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the introduction of an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for British citizens travelling to the Kingdom.

The new ETA scheme, which comes into effect on 1 July 2026, has been introduced as part of reciprocal arrangements between the two countries, following the UK’s extension of similar travel facilities to Saudi citizens.

Under the new system, UK passport holders will be able to obtain an electronic travel authorisation allowing multiple entries into Saudi Arabia and permitting stays of up to 180 days, whether consecutively or across several visits within a one-year period.

The ETA will facilitate travel for a range of purposes, including:

  • Tourism
  • Business visits
  • Short-term study programmes
  • Family and social visits

However, travellers should note that the ETA does not replace visas required for employment, residency, or Hajj. Individuals travelling for these purposes must continue to obtain the appropriate visa through the relevant channels.

The Ministry confirmed that the service will be available to holders of all types of UK passports, making travel to the Kingdom more accessible than ever before and opening new opportunities for cultural exchange, tourism, education, and business cooperation between the two nations.

For British Muslims, the introduction of the ETA may also provide greater flexibility for visiting the Kingdom throughout the year for Umrah-related travel, subject to the prevailing regulations and entry requirements issued by the Saudi authorities.

CBHUK welcomes initiatives that enhance accessibility and strengthen ties between the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. We encourage travellers to review the latest official guidance before making travel arrangements and to ensure they obtain the correct travel authorisation for their intended purpose of visit.
